MicroRNAs in cancer metastasis and angiogenesis

Abstract: Cancer metastasis is a malignant process by which tumor cells migrate from their primary site of origin to other organs. It is the main cause of poor prognosis in cancer patients. Angiogenesis is the process of generating new blood capillaries from pre-existing vasculature. It plays a vital role in primary tumor growth and distant metastasis. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs involved in regulating normal physiological processes as well as cancer pathogenesis. They suppress gene expression by specifically bi… Show more

“…Besides more traditional signaling factors, research has also focused on the roles of more recently discovered factors such as microRNAs (miRNAs) 20 . These 20-25 nucleotide small non-coding RNA molecules play important signaling roles in various mechanisms of health and disease, such as angiogenesis and carcinogenesis 2123 . Biogenesis of miRNAs starts in the nucleus where precursor miRNAs are being transcribed.…”

“…Over one-half of the characterized miRNAs are located in genomic regions associated with oncogenes, suggesting that miRNAs may serve important roles in carcinogenesis and cancer progression (12). An increasing number of previous studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are dysregulated in approximately all types of human malignancy, including ccRCC (13)(14)(15). miRNA (miR)-19a (16), miR-224 (17), miR-1274a (18) and miR-543 (19) were upregulated in ccRCC, whereas, miR-30a (20), miR-200a (21), miR-384 (22) and miR-411 (23) were downregulated.…”

“…As a class of small endogenous nonprotein-coding RNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs) suppress cellular protein expression by binding the 39-untranslated regions (39-UTRs) of target mRNAs (5,6). Accumulating evidence has shown that miRNAs play key roles in multiple physiologic and pathologic processes, including cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis.…”
