MicroRNA Polymorphisms in Cancer: A Literature Analysis

Abstract: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in microRNA (miRNA) genes (miR-SNPs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their involvement in the development of various types of cancer. Therefore, a systematic review on this topic was needed. From 55 scientific publications we collected 20 SNPs, which are located within 18 miRNA encoding genes and have been associated with 16 types of cancer. Among 20 miRNA gene polymorphisms 13 are located within the premature miRNA region, five within m… Show more

“…Clearly distinguishing between subgroups of patients who have a high or low risk of relapse, treatment resistance and metastasis remains a challenge (22), therefore there is an urgent need to identify biomarkers that can be used to identify patients that require more aggressive postoperative treatment. m iR NAs a re deregulated in numerous human cancers (23,24). Previous studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are reliable and cost-effective biomarkers that can be utilized in the diagnosis and assessment of the progression, therapeutic response and prognosis of a wide spectrum of malignant tumors, including esophageal cancer (7,(25)(26)(27).…”

“…The position of miR-SNPs included pri-, pre-, and/or mature miRNA, and the function of the miR-SNPs depended on its position [ 27 ]. The pre-miR-SNPs included hsa- mir-146a rs2910164, hsa- mir-196a-2 rs11614913, hsa- mir-499 rs3746444, hsa- mir-149 rs2292832, and hsa- mir-27a rs895819.…”

“…Unlike many other diseases, such as infectious diseases, that have a particular cause, most cancers are often the consequences of several factors including genetic/epigenetic features and lifestyle factors (Ambrosone, Hong, & Goodwin, 2015). Recently, researchers have been interested in the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their polymorphism in breast cancer (Bachour & Bennett, 2011;Pipan, Zorc, & Kunej, 2015).…”
