MicroRNA dysregulation in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland in relation to prognosis and gene fusion status: a cohort study

Abstract: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is among the most frequent malignancies of the salivary gland, and is notorious for its prolonged clinical course characterized by frequent recurrences often years after initial treatment. No molecular marker has been shown to have independent prognostic value in ACC, including characteristic gene fusions involving MYB, MYBL1, and NFIB. MicroRNA has been shown to be associated with clinical outcome in numerous malignancies, including one study of ACC, warranting further validatio… Show more

“…But according to a review, the rate of detection of PNI varies widely from study to study . Most highly, there is a report that PNI was observed at a level of 82.1% with 184 patients . But as Vrielinck et al has already mentioned, when enough tissue is analyzed, detection of PNI in ACC is almost inevitable .…”

“…However, several studies suggest that perineural invasion is not associated with survival. 21,22 Finally, the NCDB does not provide information on disease-specific mortality. However, the impact of comorbidity on survival was accounted for using Charlson/Deyo score.…”

“…The NCDB also does not provide information on perineural invasion, which has long been considered an important prognostic factor. However, several studies suggest that perineural invasion is not associated with survival . Finally, the NCDB does not provide information on disease‐specific mortality.…”

“…Indeed, the dysregulation of various miRNAs has been identified in malignant tumors and may serve as prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets 15 17 . In humans, miR-1180-3p is expressed from chromosome 17 (p11.2), and this miRNA may play different roles in carcinogenesis as drivers, oncogenes and tumor suppressors 18 20 . For example, Zhu et al 19 found that plasma miR-1180-3p is downregulated in early gastric cancer, suggesting that plasma miR-1180-3p can be used as new potential biomarker for the diagnosis of early gastric cancer.…”
