MicroRNA-21 gene and cancer

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of 18-27-nucleotides single-stranded RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. It has been demonstrated that miRNAs regulate a variety of physiological functions, including development, cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. There are growing evidence showed that miRNAs can affect the genesis and development of tumor and play a kind of tumor suppressor or oncogenic function by regulating its targetted gene-related signal pathway. … Show more

“…has been found to be implicated in almost every cancer network [71][72][73][74]. Taking into account that miR-21 is 22 nt in length, the limiting factor for anti-miRNA POC design is the length of antisense oligonucleotide to form (i) a stable duplex with the target and (ii) to have potential cleavage sites in miR-21.…”

“…MicroRNAs may act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors involved in the tumorigenesis and aggression of human cancers (59). It was observed in a recent study that Huaier treatment (2-8 mg/ml for 24-72 h) induced cell apoptosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma A549 cells via upregulation of miR-26b-5p (15), an miRNA known to be significantly downregulated in various types of cancer and to induce apoptosis in cancer cells (60,61).…”

“…There is increased expression of miR-421, miR-21, miR-221/222, and miR-106a in gastric cancer, while the expression of miR-124a, miR-128b, miR-148, and miR-129 is reduced (Guo et al, 2009;Konishi et al, 2012). MiRNA-21 was one of the first miRNAs to be discovered in human cells, and its expression is significantly upregulated in different kinds of solid tumors, for instance breast and gastric cancer, and is closely associated with cancer pathogenesis (Huang et al, 2013). MiR-21 expression in gastric cancer tissues is significantly higher than in adjacent tissues.…”
