The anticancer effect of Huaier (Review)

Abstract: Abstract. Trametes robiniophila Murr. (Huaier) is a sandy beige mushroom found on the trunks of trees and has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for ~1,600 years. The anticancer effects of Huaier have attracted increasing worldwide interest in recent years. Accumulating evidence suggests that the anticancer mechanism of Huaier may be associated with various biological activities, such as inhibition of cell proliferation, anti-metastasis, interference with tumor angiogenesis and tumor-specif… Show more

“…A proteoglycan isolated from Poria cocos induced the activation of RAW 264.7 cells through up-regulation of TNF␣ (31). Additionally, it has been reported that the immunomodulatory effect is one of underlying mechanisms of anti-tumor activity of Huaier (2,7,32). Our work showed that the proteoglycan TPG-1 isolated from Huaier significantly increased the production of NO, TNF␣, and IL-6 in RAW264.7 cells.…”

“…(Huaier) is a medicinal fungus that has been applied for disease treatment for more than 1600 years in China. Numerous studies have shown that Huaier exhibits good clinical efficacy in the treatment of liver cancer, gastric cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer (1)(2)(3)(4). There is evidence that some polysaccharides of Huaier aqueous extract show anti-tumor and immunomodulatory activities.…”

“…It has been widely used in Chinese Medicine for nearly 1600 years 11. Huaier granule, the aqueous product of Huaier extract, is an approved TCM by Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) to be used alone or combined with other drugs in treatment of leukaemia, osteosarcoma, malignant lymphoma, breast cancer, lung cancer, rectal cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, colon cancer and pancreatic adenocarcinoma, respectively 12. Recent studies show that the active ingredient in Huaier extract is a proteoglycan, composed of 41.5% polysaccharides, 12.93% amino acids and 8.72% water 13.…”

“…Huang Qi Huai (HQH) granules, with the brand name Huan Er Jin is primarily composed of trametes robiniophila murr (Huaier), Chinese wolfberry fruit and polygonatum. Huaier, which is rich in polysaccharides, has been applied in traditional Chinese medicine for approximately 1600 years [9]. Pharmacological studies suggest that trametes robiniophila murr is a biological response modifier and can stimulate many elements of the immune system to enhance immunity.…”
