Occurrence of Emerging Contaminants in Southeast Asian Environments: Present Status, Challenges, and Future Prospects

The status of emerging contaminant (EC) profiles in Southeast Asia is currently unclear and often overshadowed by studies conducted in developed regions such as North America, Europe, and Asia. EC research in Southeast Asia is especially critical due to its high population density and poor sanitation infrastructure that introduce large amounts of ECs into the aquatic environment. This literature Review investigated the status of EC research in 11 Southeast Asian countries. Key pharmaceutical groups such as antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, sulfamethazine, ciprofloxacin, and lincomycin) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (diclofenac, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen) were among the most frequently studied group of ECs, while other significant groups of interests in this Review included per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and phthalate esters (PAEs). With most Southeast Asian countries having agrarian economies and the onset of climate change, the overutilization of antibiotics and pesticides to meet the commercial demand for agriculture and livestock products is a major threat to aquatic environments and even human health in this region. This Review identifies understudied emerging contaminant groups in Southeast Asia such as disinfectants and transformation byproducts and recommends future research directions for Southeast Asia, particularly focusing on seasonal trends of EC input into surface and groundwater environments.

Microplastics resulting from the fragmentation of plastics in electronic waste (e-waste) are an emerging but understudied environmental concern. This systematic review employs a Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response (DPSIR) framework to investigate the sources, prevalence, and environmental effects of e-waste microplastics, identifying knowledge gaps. The available literature on e-waste microplastics was retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science (n = 24), and trends in electrical and electronic equipment were retrieved from European Union databases. The growing incorporation of electronics into daily life results in a global annual growth rate of 3–4% for e-waste, of which only 17.4% is collected for recycling. E-waste microplastics are frequently found in soils near disposal or disassembly facilities, potentially leaching hazardous metals (e.g., Pb) or organic compounds (e.g., flame retardants). These microplastics contaminate the food chain and can have adverse effects on the soil and gut microbiome, organisms, and human health, either independently or associated with other chemicals. Responses include the implementation of regulations, improvement of waste management systems, and mitigation measures. Despite these concerns, the literature on the topic remains limited, emphasizing the need for additional research on the identification of e-waste microplastics and their toxicity.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous pollutants in various environmental matrices. In this study, 82 road dust samples collected from Myanmar and Taiwan between 2014 and 2018 were analyzed to investigate the status of MPs pollution and distribution. In Myanmar, the mean abundances of MPs in road dust were high in cities, such as Nay Pyi Taw (285 pieces /kg dry weight), Mandalay (79 pieces/ kg), and Yangon (63 pieces / kg). Alternatively, no MPs were found in samples from the rural areas, Wundwin and Bagan. The mean MP abundance was 555 pieces/ kg in road dust from Taiwan, which was two to nine times that of road dust from Myanmar. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the dominant polymers detected in road dust from Myanmar, whereas polyvinyl chloride was a major component in road dust from Taiwan. These results suggest that differences in economic and industrial activities and population densities are related to MP profiles in road dust. The plastic additives butylated hydroxytoluene, diethyl phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate were identified in a polyvinyl chloride MP in the road dust. These MPs originate from plastic products in the environment and lead to extensive pollution with hazardous chemicals. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the occurrence of MPs in road dust from Myanmar.
