As current concerns about food safety issues around the world are still relatively serious, more and more food safety issues have become the focus of people's attention. What's more serious is that environmental pollution and changes in human lifestyles have also led to the emergence of contaminants in food, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) being typical representatives. MPs and NPs (M/NPs) in food are gradually becoming recognized by regulatory authorities and the public. Most published reviews on M/NPs have been focused on the environmental ecosystems. In those papers, it is only sporadically mentioned that M/NPs can also appear in food. As far as we know, there has not been a systematic review of the pollution and existing status of M/NPs in food. This Review focuses on the harmfulness of M/NPs, the ways in which M/NPs contaminate food, the residual amount of M/NPs in food, and the current analysis and detection methods for M/NPs in food. Current analysis and detection methods have problems such as being time-consuming, involving cumbersome operation, and giving poor accuracy. In the future, it will be necessary to increase the research on methods for efficient and sensitive separation and detection of M/NPs in food. Finally, it is hoped that this Review will arouse more people's awareness of and attention to the seriousness of M/NPs in food.

Microplastic pollution in the marine and freshwater environment has been a global concern. The pollution in densely populated urban areas may be more severe than in any other environment, especially in areas lacking plastic waste management. Urban lakes in the Megacity of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and neighboring areas, which is the most populated city in the world, have been severely polluted by plastic waste. The urban lakes studied were located downstream of watershed areas of major rivers that outflow into Jakarta Bay, the Java Sea, and finally the ocean. To our knowledge, no studies have been reported on microplastic pollution in urban lakes in the Megacity of Jakarta. This study investigated the first occurrence of microplastics in the surface water of six urban lakes in the Megacity of Jakarta. Grab water samples were collected in either inlet or outlet areas of lakes. The water samples were pretreated and sieved to separate the microplastics. The quantification and the identification of microplastics were made using a Stereo Microscope. The most downstream urban lakes in the densely populated area close to Jakarta Bay, which is the final disposal of plastic wastes from the river canal and runoff from the surrounding area, had more microplastics than the urban lakes in the area with less population and further from the Bay. The most abundant microplastics found in the lake’s surface water was about 30,000 particles/m3, whereas 300 - 500 µm and the foam were the dominant size and type of microplastics discovered. The concern is that the smallest size of particles of microplastics found in the lake’s water could potentially contaminate aquatic biota, especially fish, not only in the lakes but also in Jakarta Bay, where fishing activities are substantial.

Microplastic pollution is a serious threat to the biota and humans, and wastewater treatment plants act as a pathway for entering microplastics into the environment. This study discusses the identification and quantification of microplastics in the south of Tehran municipal WWTP. The sampling was repeated three times in a month, overall, nine times for water samples and once a month in total, three times for digested sludge samples by steel bucket with the WPO method. The microplastics from water and digested sludge samples were identified using the micro‐Raman microscope. According to this study, 98.9% of microplastic particles in effluent and 99.2% of microplastics particles in the sludge were fibers. The influent contained an average of 180 ± 4.3 MP/L and was reduced to 5.3 ± 0.31 MP/L in the final effluent. Despite this significant reduction, we calculate that this WWTP releases 2.3 × 109 microplastics per day through final effluent and 1.61 × 1010 particles per day through dried sludge into the environment. We performed micro‐Raman analyses and ICP mass to measure the amount of heavy metal absorption of MPs. In addition, SEM analyses were used to study the surface morphology of microplastic particles. Practitioner Points Fourteen different polymers were identified in the influent, effluent, and digested sludge. The main collected shapes obtained were fiber, film, and fragment, which fiber was the predominant polymer in this WWTP. The plant releases 2.3 * 109 MPs per day to its downstream environment. This WWTP has average removal with an efficiency of 99.06%.
