Micromorphological Characters as Generic Markers in the Astereae

Abstract: Summary An investigation of the style base, filament collar, endothecium, and carpopodium was conducted in order to evaluate their utility as generic markers in the tribe Astereae. The distribution of character states for these microcharacters does not correspond to generic (or, in some cases, infrageneric) limits as they are recognized by recent authors. Use of the microcharacters considered here for delimiting genera would necessitate widespread realignments of the genera in the tribe and would obscure relat… Show more

“…As an aid to the reader, therefore, we list in Table 10-1 name changes that affect our presentation of flavonoid data. Our use of the generic concepts presented in King and Robinson (1987) is motivated more by wanting to have a recent taxonomic and nomenclatural reference point for all flavonoid reports than by believing in phyletic reality of all generic concepts presented in that comprehensive study and earlier publications, some of which are still controversial (e.g., Gage, 1985;Scott, 1985;Sundberg, 1985;Turner, 1985aTurner, ,b, 1997Nesom 1989c;Bremer et aI., 1994). Flavonoid information exists for 32 genera.…”

“…The carpopodium can be symmetrical or (more usually) asymmetrical, indistinct to prominent, or even absent (Haque & Godward 1984;Funk et al 2009). Mukherjee & Nordestam 2008 (King & Robinson 1966;Sundberg 1985).…”

“…The stamens of Solidago chilensis show the anthers with obtuse bases, typical of most genera of Astereae (Shekhar and Pandey 2009), and the triangular apical appendage characteristic of the tribe (Bremer 1987). The collar of the filament of the cylindrical type is very common in the family (Shekhar and Pandey 2009), although in the Astereae tribe there are also species that have the filament collar with a swollen base, wider than the rest of filament (Sundberg 1985), of the baluster form type.…”
