Micrometeorological impacts of offshore wind farms as seen in observations and simulations

Abstract: In Europe, offshore wind farms have a capacity of 16 GW, with 71% installed at the North Sea. These wind farms represent an additional source of turbulence and may influence the stratification of the marine boundary layer. We present aircraft measurements and simulations showing an impact on temperature and humidity at hub height in the order of 0.5 K and 0.5gkg −1 even 60 km downwind of a wind farm cluster. We extend these simulations to explore a realistic future scenario, suggesting wakes in potential tem… Show more

“…Offshore wind power plant wakes can extend tens of km downwind (Platis et al, ; Siedersleben, Platis, et al, ; Siedersleben, Lundquist et al, ) in low‐turbulence, stably stratified conditions. These wakes undermine offshore power production (Nygaard, ).…”

“…Offshore ϵ has, on average, smaller values compared to those found in comparable studies onshore, with a weak diurnal cycle. The small average values of ϵ are conducive to strong and long‐lived wakes such as wakes observed in stable stratification in the North Sea (Platis et al, ; Siedersleben, Lundquist et al, ; Siedersleben, Platis, et al, ). Moreover, this extended persistence of wakes will occur throughout the diurnal cycle, given the absence of strong turbulence dissipation even in convective daytime conditions.…”

“…The aim of the campaign was to quantify wind‐farm‐cluster wakes in the North Sea for stable conditions . While the measured data enable investigation of a broad range of meteorological phenomena, our focus here is on the wind speed recovery of wakes downstream of wind farm clusters and its dependence on stability.…”

“…The data collected within the WIPAFF (WInd PArk Far Field) project have already been compared with the wakes inferred from satellite measurements and those simulated with mesoscale numerical weather prediction models . However, the results of the airborne measurement campaign have not yet been analyzed and summarized in a form suitable for direct implementation in engineering models, with the view of assessing the expected reduced energy yields of downstream wind farms.…”
