International audienceElliptic effective strength criteria in the mean-deviatoric stress plane are encountered in porous media for a granular material made of rigid grains with cohesive frictional interfaces or a material with pores in a Drucker-Prager matrix. The macroscopic strength criterion of a heterogeneous material comprising a matrix with elliptic strength criterion reinforced by rigid inclusions with perfect or imperfect interfaces is studied. Considered imperfect interfaces follow either a Tresca or a Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. Derived macroscopic criteria are shown to be a combination of a larger ellipse, which corresponds to the criterion for perfectly bounded interfaces, conditionally truncated by a smaller ellipse resulting from the activation of interfacial mechanisms. The activation of the interfacial mechanisms depends on the matrix and interfaces strength properties, inclusions concentration, as well as the macroscopic strain triaxiality ratio

The concept of a representative elementary volume (REV) provides an effective means of developing macroscopic measures in the description of granular materials. However, due to the difficulties associated with the measurement and characterization of granular microstructure the existence and size of an REV has remained largely conjectural. This study presents a systematic method to examine the characteristics of the REV using X-ray computed tomography images. The 3-D images of Silica sand, and Ottawa sand have been characterized using advanced image processing techniques. The porosity variation of Silica sand and Ottawa sand showed three characteristic regions: an initial fluctuation region due to microscopic variations, a constant plateau region, and a region with a monotonic increase/decrease due to heterogeneity. The results show that for Silica sand composed mainly of elongated particles the REV is between 5 to 11 times of D50 and for Ottawa sand composed mainly of subrounded particles is between 9 to 16 times of D50.

Instability of liquefaction is one of the major reasons which results in the failure of earth structure such as dam. The present study focuses on the simulation of static liquefaction behavior for granular materials such as sand and sand-silt mixtures. Based on micromechanical analysis of inter-particle behavior, a simple one-scale model is proposed to simulate the stress-strain response of sand; then the proposed model is extended to simulate the sand-silt mixtures using the mixture theory combining the properties of sand and silt according to their proportions. Empirical expressions are introduced to fit the critical state strength and the location of the critical state line for each mixture. Parameters of the model can be divided into two categories: the first seven parameters have the same values either with pure sand or pure silt for silt-sand with any given fines content; the other three parameters are the function of fines content and three more parameters are required to estimate their values. The predicted results of triaxial test of sand and sand-silt mixtures with different fine content, which has a good agreement with the results of laboratory tests, suggest that the proposed model can simulate static liquefaction behavior of sand and sand-silt mixtures.
