Microleakage of three sealants following conventional, bur, and air‐abrasion preparation of pits and fissures

Abstract: UltraSeal XT plus was the most effective sealant for preventing microleakage in this study. The most successful method of preparation was air abrasion with acid etch.

“…The bond between a high-performance adhesive fissure sealant and the tooth surface is stronger and more durable than that of a low-performance adhesive fissure sealant because the former resists contraction and functional stresses 8,9) . Consequences of using a low-performance adhesive fissure sealant are imperfect sealing, faulty and defective marginal integrity, and diminished ability to prevent marginal microleakageall of which permit a caries process to progress beneath the fissure sealant [8][9][10] . Currently, the most commonly used fissure sealants are R-based and GI-based fissure sealants.…”

“…The glass ionomer cement has caught the interest of investigators because it is an extremely versatile material due to its properties, such as chemical bonding to enamel, minor polymerization shrinkage, coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the tooth structure, and fluoride release at long term to the dental enamel, thus presenting a cariostatic action 10,14,17,18,24 . Seppä and Forss 22 observed that fissures sealed with glass ionomer cement were more resistant to demineralization even after its macroscopic loss, possibly due to a combination between fluoride release to enamel and the presence of remaining material in the bottom of fissures.…”
