Microextraction by packed sorbent followed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography for the fast extraction and determination of six antidepressants in urine

Abstract: The growing use of antidepressants in recent years has led to their increasing presence in forensic analyses. In this work, microextraction by packed sorbent followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection provided a fast method for determining the antidepressants mirtazapine, venlafaxine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and sertraline in human urine. The microextraction conditions (viz., type of sorbent, number of draw-eject extraction cycles or strokes, sample volum… Show more

“…One of the steps to take into account in an analytical method is the isolation and concentration of analytes of interest from the biological samples under study; the most used procedures for extracting antidepressants are liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) [6,17], solid-phase extraction (SPE) [6,[18][19][20], and some miniaturized techniques-such as solidphase microextraction (SPME) [6,21,22], microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) [6,[23][24][25], and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) [6,[26][27][28][29][30][31]. There are also several methods involving gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) [26,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38] or tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) [27,[39][40][41][42][43], ultraviolet (UV) [22,28,[44][45][46][47][48], fluorescence [25], diode array (DAD) or photodiode array (PDA)…”

“…One year later Klimowska and Wielgomas (2018) In this work the range of linearity was 25-1,000 ng/ml urine (Fuentes et al, 2019). Biagini et al ( 2020) described a reliable analytical procedure combining MEPS with UHPLC-electrospray ionization tandem MS for determination of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α, 8-iso-prostaglandin E2 and prostaglandin E2 in dried blood spots (Biagini et al, 2020).…”

“…The optimized metal-organic framework (MOF)-MEPS method offered an acceptable efficiency for the recovery of MA from urine samples (MOF-5@Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 and MOF-5@SBA-15: 94.5 and 90.3%, respectively, RSD <3.54%). The limit of detection (LOD) of MA calculated by the MOF-MEPS procedure combined with HPLC for MOF-5@Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 and MOF-5@SBA-15 were calculated to be 0.10 and 0.13 μg/ml, respectively(Rahimpoor et al, 2019).At the same timeFuentes et al (2019) developed MEPS coupled with UHPLC with photodiode array detection for analysis of the antidepressants mirtazapine, venlafaxine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and sertraline in human urine samples.…”

“…First, as our paper presents the use of a synthesized graphene-based sorbent packed into a capillary extraction column, its robustness is noteworthy, as just described, given that it was applied to more than 250 injections. As examples, other recent works pinpoint their lab-made extractive hardware being re-used five and seventy times without losing its efficiency, respectively [20,21]. Likewise, our developed extraction column surpasses by far the commercially available SPE cartridges, which can be ideally used only once.…”
