Microencapsulation of hydrophilic solid powder as fire retardant agent with epoxy resin by droplet coalescence method

Abstract: To give water resistance to Bistetrazoldiammonium (BHT-2NH 3 ) as a fire retardant agent, microencapsulation with epoxy resin was tried by the droplet coalescence method. In this method, two kinds of epoxy resin droplets were prepared; one is the larger epoxy resin droplet containing BHT-2NH 3 as a core material and the other the smaller droplets containing Imidazole as a gelation agent. The larger epoxy resin droplets were made to coalesce with the many smaller droplets during the microencapsulation process t… Show more

“…In general, in order to microencapsulate the water soluble core materials, the hydrophobic shell materials are used to increase the content and to protect the core from water or moisture by the help of oil soluble surfactant [8]- [11]. Also, the non aqueous solvents as the continuous phase have been sometimes used to prevent the core from leaking way during the microencapsulating process [12] [13].…”

“…The microcapsules with these functions can be prepared by selecting the core and the shell materials with the desired chemical and physicochemical properties and by developing the microencapsulation procedure. In general, in order to microencapsulate the water soluble core materials, the hydrophobic shell materials are used to increase the content and to protect the core from water or moisture by the help of oil soluble surfactant [4]- [7]. “…Microcapsules have been applied in many fields such as cosmetics, information-recording materials, paintings, catalyst, food industry, medicine, agriculture, adhesives and so on [1,2,3,4,5,6]. The main purposes of microencapsulation are to protect the core material from environment, to enable controlled release the core material, to modify the surface of core material, to mask the taste of core material, and so on.…”
