Microemulsion-based antifungal gel delivery to nail for the treatment of onychomycosis: formulation, optimization, and efficacy studies

Abstract: Onychomycosis is the most common nail disease affecting nail plate and nail bed. Onychomycosis causes onycholysis which creates cavity between the nail plate and nail bed, where drug formulations could be applied, providing a direct contact of drug with the nail bed facilitating drug delivery on the infected area. The purpose of the present study was to design and evaluate the potential of microemulsion-based gel as colloidal carrier for itraconazole for delivery into onycholytic nails for effective treatment … Show more

“…Additionally, w/o µEs are particularly interesting for oral protein delivery due to their increased oral bioavailability through the gastrointestinal tract and their protection capacity [ 144 ]. A large number of drugs, such as antibiotics [ 141 , 142 , 143 , 144 , 145 , 146 ], antifungals [ 147 , 148 , 149 ], anti-inflammatory [ 150 , 151 , 152 , 153 , 154 ] and immunosuppressive [ 155 ] molecules have been used in μEs systems.…”

“…The formulation was removed after 72 h and examined for any signs of erythema and edema. 29,30 Undesirable skin changes, i.e. change in color and change in skin morphology, were visually checked in for periods of 1h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h. The resulting reactions were compared and scored against a control group (n=3).…”
