“…Weakest link theory Masuda et al (1989) used the weakest link theory (e.g., Paterson and Wong, 2005) to represent the probability of fracture strength in columnar grains, gðr; sÞ, as a function of aspect ratio (r) and fracture strength (s), as follows:…”

“…The microboudinage of an intact columnar grain into two separate segments takes place in three stages : (1) before fracturing, (2) during fracturing, and (3) after fracturing. By studying Stages 1 and 2 of microboudinage, Masuda et al (1989Masuda et al ( , 2003 and Kimura et al (2006Kimura et al ( , 2010 developed a paleopiezometer based on the microboudinage structures developed within columnar mineral grains. The microboudin paleopiezometer is superior to other widely used paleopiezometers, such as those based on recrystallized grain size (e.g., Stipp and Tullis, 2003) and calcite twinning (e.g., Lacombe, 2007), because it can reveal trends in differential stress with increasing plastic strain (Masuda et al, 2011).…”

The microboudin method was first proposed by Masuda et al . in 1989 as a method for inferring differential stress based on the prevalence and character of microboudinage structures of columnar minerals.…”

“…Two other methods have been proposed specifically for palaeostress analysis (Passchier & Trouw, 1996): the calcite-twin method (e.g. Jamison & Spang, 1976;Rowe & Rutter, 1990;Lacombe, 2001); and the microboudin method (Masuda et al, 1989(Masuda et al, , 1990(Masuda et al, , 2003. “…Like other mechanically-confined systematic joints, sets of cross joints develop through a process of "sequential infilling ", whereby new joints form in between existing joints (e.g., Hobbs, 1967;Gross, 1993a & b). Evidence for sequential infilling is provided by different amounts of vein filling in boudinaged piedmontite grains (Masuda and Kuriyama, 1988;Masuda et al, 1989Masuda et al, , 1990, as well as alternating curving and noncurving cross joints (Engelder and Gross, 1993). Because paths of cross joints #1 and #3 match theoretical trajectories, it appears they propagated as if in a homogeneous medium.…”
