Microbiology of the middle meatus: a comparison between normal adults and children

Abstract: Middle meatal samples were obtained from 52 carefully selected healthy adults. In 75 per cent of the test subjects bacterial organisms were cultured. However, growth was often poor and the predominant species suggest a commensal flora: coagulase-negative staphylococci were retrieved from 35 per cent, Corynebacterium sp. from 23 per cent and Staphyloccus aureus from eight per cent of the adults. These data are very different from those previously obtained among children where--even in the absence of obvious ENT… Show more

“…Another limitation is the rarity of middle meatus secretion, even when a (minimally) invasive procedure, such as nasal endoscopy, is used. (16,18) This was confirmed, in our study, by the fact that only 6 patients (5 in the acute asthma group and 1 in the stable asthma group) presented secretion in the middle meatus. This limitation might hinder the validation of positive culture as the gold standard for confirming a diagnosis of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis.…”

“…If secretions were observed, a Juhn-Tym Tap tube (Xomed Inc., Jacksonville, FL, USA) was used to collect a sample for aerobic/anaerobic culture and sensitivity testing. (17,18) The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used to compare categorical variables between the patients with stable asthma and those with acute asthma. Unpaired t-tests were used to analyze numerical variables.…”

“…Out of 81 samples taken from veterinary students, 59 staphylococci were isolated (72.8%), that is considered as an expected value, due to the fact that staphylococci consist natural micro flora of humans (Gordts et al, 2000). Out of 59 staphylococci, 24 were identified by ΜΑLDI-TOF as CoNS.…”

“…The population participated may not be considered as representative for the veterinary professional population in Greece, but nevertheless it gives an initial idea of the current situation with regards to CoNS occurrence, that is considered important on public health grounds. The detailed demographic data collected alongside with data on lifestyle, habits and health status, as presented in Table 1, are considered crucial for evaluating possible associations to the occurrence of staphylococci (Gordts et al, 2000;Kock et al, 2016;Gomez-Sanz et al, 2013) and therefore have been assessed in detail. Table 5 presents in detail the examined associated factors with CoNS occurrence in the Veterinary students' population sampled.…”
