Microbiologic characteristics and antibiotic resistance rates of diabetic foot infections

Abstract: Purpose: the purpose of this research was to identify the sociodemographic and microbiological characteristics and antibiotic resistance rates of patients with diabetic foot infections, hospitalized in an emergency reference center. Methods: it was an observational and transversal study. The sociodemographic data were collected by direct interview with the patients. During the surgical procedures, specimens of tissue of the infected foot lesions were biopsied to be cultured, and for bacterial resistance analy… Show more

“…Uncontrolled diabetes or improper management of it leads to the development of diabetic foot ulcers (21,22). In the current study majority of the patients with diabetic foot ulcers were male (62.9%), these results are in line with that reported by other studies (23,24). In the current study, the overall prevalence of patients with diabetic foot ulcers was 11.3%, which is higher than that of the global prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers reported by Zhang et al (5).…”

“…Ciprofloxacin was the agent with the lowest susceptibility to Gram-negatives, most likely because it is an oral antibiotic, which patients must have used before hospitalization and whose previous use induced resistance. In a Brazilian study conducted in Amazonas, 43.5% of the Gram-negative isolated germs were resistant to ciprofloxacin [ 23 ].…”
