Microbial Diversity and Community Composition of Duodenum Microbiota of High and Low Egg-Yielding Taihang Chickens Identified Using 16S rRNA Amplicon Sequencing

Abstract: The duodenum is an important digestive organ for poultry and houses a variety of microbes that help chickens to enhance nutrient absorption and improve production. To evaluate the characteristic of gut microbiome, duodenum content samples from 42-week-old native Taihang chickens with high (H) and low (L) egg-yielding were collected for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis. Consequently, 1,361,341 sequences were clustered into 2055 OTUs, with percentages of affiliation of 96.50 and 57.30% at phylum and genus l… Show more

“…Also, the number of individuals examined per study varied notably (from only 20 to 3,480, from which, however, only tens to hundreds of individuals were chosen for microbiota sampling). Frequently, the research adopted the strategy of comparing 2 distinct groups of animals, one with the lowest and the other one with the highest performance selected for the microbial analysis out of the total number of the experimental individuals forming a continuum (as described in Han et al 2022 ). Typically, researchers performed a multivariate analysis aimed at identifying bacterial taxa associated with performance.…”

“…The composition of microbiota can be affected or influenced by nutrition as well as the function that the microorganisms are going to present for the host [121]. The gut microbiota among humans and animals has been shown to remain a very crucial influencer of health.…”

“…The intestinal microbiota, especially beneficial bacteria, regulates host health in various ways ( Ding et al, 2021 ). Several intestinal bacteria, such as Enterococcus , Bacteroides , and Feacalibacterium , contribute to the body weight gain and egg-laying performance of hens ( Han et al, 2022 ). Blautia is considered as a potential probiotic bacteria and is widely present in the intestines of mammals ( Liu et al, 2021 ).…”
