Microbial community dynamics and functional responses that contribute to tolerance of high concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon

Abstract: BACKGROUND It is a common problem that high‐concentration petroleum hydrocarbon (hc‐PH) is difficult to degrade and remove using biological methods. RESULTS In this study, when the concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) were increased from 972.4 ± 40.3 to 6953.8 ± 294.3 mg L−1, all degradation rates of PH by activated sludge (AS) were beyond 79%. However, the degradation rate of hc‐PH (from 9958.3 ± 401.6 to 19 953.3 ± 896.5 mg L−1) by AS was significantly lower than that of low‐concentration petroleum h… Show more

“…The observed decease in hydrocarbon biodegradation efficiency at higher sludge concentrations in the AK6 batch cultures agrees with previous studies ( Cui et al, 2020 ) and may be due to accumulation of toxic compounds and metabolites in the culture medium ( Lin et al, 2010 ) and/or oxygen and nutrient limitation ( Leahy and Colwell, 1990 ; Ismail et al, 2013 ). The impact of the initial sludge concentration on the AK6 community structure revealed several take-home messages.…”

“…The impact of the initial sludge concentration on the AK6 community structure revealed several take-home messages. First, the initial sludge concentration is a key determinant of the involved community composition ( Cui et al, 2020 ; Gao et al, 2022 ). Second, the AK6 community shifts occurred exclusively in the most abundant members.…”

“…This is probably because as the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons increases, a layer of oil film is formed on the water surface, which limits the dissolved oxygen content in the water and affects the transfer of electron acceptors, and the toxic effect of petroleum hydrocarbons on microbial membranes is also more obvious. [ 37 ] Although Pseudomonas has a good degradability to petroleum pollution, the amount of microorganisms added in each experiment is equal, and the amount of petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants it can consume is the same, so it cannot completely degrade petroleum pollutants. The degradation efficiency of the contaminated water sample decreased significantly after the initial concentration of the contaminated water sample increased, which affects the degradation effect of the mixed bacteria on the petroleum hydrocarbon in the water sample.…”

“…With the rapid development of the global economy, a large number of non-renewable fossil-based fuels (coal, oil, and gas) are always needed for mining and refining, in order to provide various types of functional compounds to improve industrial processes and living quality (Cui et al, 2020 ). Among them, petroleum and its derivatives play a crucial role in human activities.…”
