“…Therefore, the difference in psychophysical performance between the two diabetic groups raises the issue of whether visual function loss is the initial stage of the development of retinopathy. The evidence from this investigation and previous work indicates that screening programmes for retinopathy should be refined by including psychophyscial procedures and monitoring of early nephropathy (Barnet et al 1985). These results have provided encouragement for further studied incorporating computer controlled procedures and a double blind trial eliminate observer bias.…”

“…microalbuminuria, serve as a predictor of overt nephropathy (Viberti et al 1982;Mathieson et al 1984;Mogensen & Christensen 1984), and as an indicator of a higher mortality risk garret et al 1981;Mogensen 1984). It has also been suggested that microalbuminuria predicts proliferative retinopathy (Vigstrup & Mogensen 1985; Mogensen et al 1985), which justifies frequent ophthalmic examination (Barnet et al 1985).…”

“…Several recent studies [37][38][39] have demonstrated that the well known association between diabetic retinopathy and overt nephropathy extends to include incipient nephropathy as well. Because of the small number of patients in our study, the results cannot be directly compared with the results of larger series.…”

“…It has been shown that high blood pressure level accelerates, and effective blood pressure reduction slows down, the progression of diabetic renal disease [34,35]. Thus, the treatment of arterial blood pressure elevations at much lower levels than those attempted in the past has been recommended [36].Several recent studies [37][38][39] have demonstrated that the well known association between diabetic retinopathy and overt nephropathy extends to include incipient nephropathy as well. Because of the small number of patients in our study, the results cannot be directly compared with the results of larger series.…”

“…There also exists a positive correlation between albumin excretion rate and the grade of diabetic retinopathy (Barnett et al 1985;Gatling et al 1988;N0&aard et al 1988;Agardh et al 1989;Nielsen et al 1990), and microalbuminuria may predict proliferative retinopathy (Mogensen et al 1985).…”
