Micro Sensor Node for Air Pollutant Monitoring: Hardware and Software Issues

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks equipped with various gas sensors have been actively used for air quality monitoring. Previous studies have typically explored system issues that include middleware or networking performance, but most research has barely considered the details of the hardware and software of the sensor node itself. In this paper, we focus on the design and implementation of a sensor board for air pollutant monitoring applications. Several hardware and software issues are discussed to explore the possib… Show more

“…Nor was the meteorological information provided by the monitoring system. Moreover, Choi et al proposed a monitoring system targeting air pollutants, called 'APOLLO' [5]. This system could simultaneously monitor many air pollutants (CO, NO 2 , volatile organic compounds (VOC), particulate matter (PM), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 )) while integrating the WSN technology into the system to transmit sensing data.…”

“…Jelicic et al [12] present a PIR (pyro electric infrared) and MOX sensors based adaptive WSN model for the measurement of built air quality and also explained the network, sensor, and node level power consumption reduction techniques. Choi et al [14] present a design of IEEE802.15.4 standard based gas sensor system for the monitoring of air pollution. They are focused on various themes in the design of air pollution monitoring system such as power, gas sensor operation mode, and the miniature size of the on-board processing sensor array.…”

“…These papers present design of a wireless sensor network which is able to collect the information from sensors, process it and communicate wirelessly in the network for industrial monitoring, agriculture, composting processes etc. [7,8] . In last year presented design and development of a flexible smart gas detection system describes various flexible protocols by which node hardware and sensors can be configured remotely [9].…”
