Micelle-Mediated Synthesis of Single-Crystalline β(3C)-SiC Fibers via Emulsion Electrospinning

Abstract: Submicroscale SiC fiber mats were prepared by the electrospinning of an oil-in-water(O/W) precursor emulsion, a subsequent thermal curing treatment, and calcination at 1600 °C. Low-molecular-weight PCS micelles entrapped within an aqueous PVP matrix played an important role in forming the continuous and dense core structure, resulting in pure SiC fibers. The manipulation of SiC fiber diameters could be obtained via control of the micellar PCS concentration (10-30 wt %), enabling the production of dense and hig… Show more

“…In order to achieve a slower release there has been great promise in a range of techniques. The use of dendrimers [49], PEG conjugates [50,51] or micelles [52,53] are all viable options for slowing the release of drugs. These types of systems could either make the imiquimod part of a bigger molecule or trap the imiquimod into a multi-stage release.…”

“…Among the various fabrication approaches for 1D ceramic nanomaterials, electrospinning appears to be the most straightforward and versatile technique . Considerable research has been dedicated to the preparation and multifunctional properties of electrospun ceramic nanofibers, but very a few studies focus on their mechanical performance. It is well known that typical spinning solution for electrospun ceramic nanofibers contains polymeric precursor, additive polymer and volatile solvent.…”

“…It is not hard to envision a variety of potential applications that are opening up for these polymers in areas such as nanotechnology [1], surface science, catalysis [2][3][4][5][6], liquid crystals [7][8][9], new ceramic materials [10][11][12][13][14], organic-inorganic hybrids etc. PCS, which contains both Si and C in their back bone structure, have been of particular importance as precursor to SiC [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. PCS can be prepared in one step from simple silane monomers or mixtures containing vinyl, halo or halomethyl moieties in the presence of an active metal.…”

“…The Wurtz type coupling reaction, which employs alkali metals, can be used for the preparation of PCS. It generally leads to extensive crosslinking and appreciable Si Si and C C bonding in addition to SiC bonding [15][16][17]. A reasonable ceramic yield is obtained after sufficient crosslinking which increases the softening temperature and decreases the solubility.…”
