Micellar Structures of Poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine)s in THF/Toluene Mixtures and Their Functionalization with Gold

Abstract: The effects of the block copolymer composition and the solvent selectivity on the micellar morphologies of poly(styrene- b-4-vinylpyridine)s (PS- b-P4VPs) and their functionalizations with gold were studied in 10 mg/mL solutions using small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The solvent selectivity for the PS block was controlled by toluene/tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixtures in which toluene and THF are selective for PS and nonselective, respectively. The micellar structure was stro… Show more

“…As THF has a preferential affinity for PS compared to P4VP (reported Flory-Huggins interaction parameters χ PS-THF = 0.35 and χ P4VP-THF = 0.6) [27], PS-b-P4VP micelles of a PS corona and a P4VP core have been observed in THF solutions [28]. However, the micellization is highly dependent on a number of variables, such as P4VP block ratio, P4VP block molecular weight and PS-b-P4VP concentration [29]. Our PS-b-P4VP solution in THF is optically clear, and the hydrodynamic radius (R h ), obtained from the DLS measurement, is 7.5 nm, indicating that no large aggregates are formed, probably due to the low P4VP weight fraction (∼0.175), the small M P4VP n , and the low polymer concentration.…”

“…Thus, more morphological changes can be expected from the crew-cut micelles than the hairy micelles by changing solvent selectivity. 23 The vesicle of PS-b-P4VP was observed in the selective solvent without adding small molecules. This observation might be due to the more systematic screening of the solvent selectivity.…”

“…The toluene/ethanol system covers from PS-selective, to neutral, and to P4VP-selective solvents although our previous THF/toluene system covers only from neutral to PS-selective solvents. 23 Thus, we expected that a wider range of the micellar morphologies can be formed in the toluene/ethanol solvent system. The solvent selectivity was narrowly screened by changing the mixing ratio of the two solvents.…”

“…Among them, properties of the polymeric micelles, including the lengths of different stabilizing blocks and softness of stabilizing micelle cores were also employed [16]. However, glyco-NPs have not been utilized for preparation of Janus hybrid particles.…”
