MH2P2O7 (M = Co, Ni):  Metamagnetic Interaction between the Zigzag Octahedral Chains

Abstract: CoH2P2O7 and NiH2P2O7, which contain edge-sharing zigzag octahedral chains, were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Both compounds exhibit field-induced metamagnetic behavior because of the strong intrachain ferromagnetic and relatively weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions.

“…31,34-42 However, because of the strong spin-orbit coupling of Co II ions, the magnetic interaction might be more complicated. 1,35 This similar metamagneticlike transition was also observed in other polymeric chain systems containing ferromagnetic 1D double EO azido bridges with weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions. 31,34,36,41 For instance, the previous related compound [Mn(tptz)(N 3 ) 2 ] n 36 (tptz = 2,4,6-tris(2pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine), which contains similar double EO azidebridged 1D chains that are assembled by face-to-face p-p and C-H ◊ ◊ ◊ p interactions, revealed overall metamagnetic behaviour below 2.7 K with a very small H c of approximately 80 Oe.…”

“…5, which revealed that 1 is a metamagnet with a typical crossover magnetic hysteresis in the slightly sigmoid shape of the M(H) curve. [34][35][36] The critical field H c is ª 70 Oe, estimated as the field at which a maximum dM/d H value is reached. This metamagnetic-like transition results from the presence of weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions among the strongly ferromagnetic chains.…”

“…These steps are diminished above an applied field of approximately 0.01 T at 2 K, thus indicating a possible metamagnetic transition. This phenomenon has similarly been observed in some of the recent examples, such as MH 2 P 2 O 7 8a and LiM 2 H 3 (P 2 O 7 ) 2 8b (M=Ni, Co), in which the magnetic chains are reportedly quasi‐one‐dimensional. Second, the AC magnetic susceptibility (Figure 5 and Figure S9 in the Supporting Information) shows a rather complicated frequency dependence, where the nonzero χ ′′ signal covers a broad range of temperatures (ca.…”

“…We would like to point out that similar replacement has also been observed in other systems. For example, H 2 M 2 PO 7 (M=Ni, Co)26 is a hydrated metal phosphate; its lithium derivate LiH 3 M 2 (P 2 O 7 ) 2 ,27 in which 1/4 of the protons on hydroxyl groups are replaced by Li + , can be obtained by adding LiNO 3 to the reaction systems.…”
