Hirsutella (Ophiocordycipitaceae: Hypocreales) is a genus of insect, mite, and nematode pathogens with an asexual morph, which generally produce a mucilaginous cluster of one or several conidia on phialides that are basally subulate and taper to a fine neck. The generic name Hirsutella has been proposed for suppression in favour of Ophiocordyceps as a consequence of the ending of dual nomenclature for different morphs of pleomorphic fungi in 2011. Though the generic name is well established, geographically dispersed, and speciose, exceptionally few sequences are available in online databases. We examined 46 isolates of 23 Hirsutella species from the USA, curated by the USDA-ARS Collection of Entomopathogenic Fungal Cultures (ARSEF Culture Collection), that previously had not been molecularly characterized and produced a phylogeny of these organisms; we included previously published Hirsutella and Ophiocordyceps taxa. In producing the largest phylogeny of Hirsutella isolates so far, we provide: (1) context for discussing previously-hypothesized relationships; (2) evidence for revisions as taxonomic transitions move forward; and (3) available molecular data to be incorporated into further evolutionary studies of Ophiocordycipitaceae.

Studies on Hirsutella citriformis Speare are scarce. Among these, some reports have focused on phenotypic identification, based on its morphological structure and morphometric characteristics. This fungus is known to control economically important citrus crop pests. In recent years, H. citriformis has received increased attention as a control agent for the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), which causes the Huanglongbing (HLB) disease. Unfortunately, formal H. citriformis strains characterization is marginal, which mainly involves the role of biologically active exudates (metabolites) produced during their growth. Information regarding their mode of action and biocontrol potential is limited. However, epizootics reports of this fungus, under suitable environmental conditions for its development (25 °C to 28 °C and ~80% relative humidity), have demonstrated its parasitization efficacy. Therefore, it becomes challenging to determine whether H. citriformis strains may be developed as commercial products. In this review, we showed relevant information on isolation and bioassay strategies of H. citriformis to evaluate potential biocontrol strains under laboratory and field conditions in America.

Resumen Diaphorina citri es el vector del Huanglongbing (HLB), enfermedad devastadora de los cítricos a escala mundial. Se realizó la búsqueda de hongos entomopatógenos (HE) como agentes potenciales de control biológico de D. citri en huertas comerciales de cítricos y plantas de mirto en zonas urbanas del estado de Colima, México. Los hongos que se encontraron asociados a la plaga fueron aislados e identificados por métodos morfológicos y moleculares. Se aislaron 30 cepas de HE del orden Hypocreales: Hirsutella citriformis, Isaria javanica, Beauveria bassiana y Simplicillium lanosoniveum; 2 géneros de HE del orden Entomophthorales (Batkoa sp. y Entomophthora sp.) de los cuales no se logró su aislamiento. Se reporta por primera ocasión, la incidencia natural de Simplicillium lanosoniveum y Batkoa sp. asociados a D. citri en Colima, México. Por la incidencia con la que se encontró a H. citriformis, podría considerarse como un buen candidato para el control biológico del psílido D. citri, que al igual que las especies de Entomophthorales, abren la posibilidad de explorar su potencial como agentes microbianos de este psílido.
