Metrological Aspects of Abrasive Tool Active Surface Topography Evaluation

Abstract: Analysis of the shape and location of abrasive grain tips as well as their changes during the grinding process, is the basis for forecasting the machining process results. This paper presents a methodology of using the watershed segmentation in identifying abrasive grains on the abrasive tool active surface. Some abrasive grain tips were selected to minimize the errors of detecting many tips on a single abrasive grain. The abrasive grains, singled out as a result of the watershed segmentation, were then analyz… Show more

“…The abrasive grains and the abrasive aggregate were measured using an ATOS III SO scanner. The use of structural light scanner allows for a detailed analysis of the geometric structure of the grinding wheel active surface [23,24]. The abrasive grain and abrasive aggregates were modelled as a rigid body, whereas the workpiece as viscoplastic.…”

“…The surface topography is a general term for the surface geometric shape on the concept of the microscopic angle, and it is the characterization of surface height distribution features, including surface roughness, waviness, surface texture and shape error, etc. [1], [2]. The topography symbolizes the fingerprint of the workpiece surface and it can reveal the essential features of the surface more directly compared with the surface roughness or surface contour [3].…”
