Abstract: . Fumonisins are mycotoxins occurring worldwide, mainly in maize and maize-based food products, which could affect animal and human health. This paper reviews analytical methodologies for the determination of these fungal toxins in foods. It includes extraction, cleanup, derivatization procedures, detection, quantification, and confirmation procedures. Initial attempts at gas chromatographic methods and thin layer chromatography were supplanted by liquid chromatographic methods, mainly performed with fluoromet… Show more

“…Monitoring the presence of these mycotoxins is crucial in view of their relevance. The classical methods of mycotoxins determination involve solvent toxin extraction processes and detection by chromatographic methods [ 48 ]. These techniques are very accurate, but time-consuming and costly, thus hampering analyses of large samples and real-time decision making [ 49 , 50 ].…”

“…Recently, Lino et al [15] reviewed the analytical methodology available for the determination of fumonisins in foods. These methods generally involve liquid extraction, with mixtures of polar solvents, such as methanol/ water [16,17], acetonitrile/water [18], methanol/acetonitrile/water [19], and acetonitrile/NaH 2 PO 4 [20].…”

“…Different derivatization reagents have been reported, namely, o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA)-the most used [8,9,21], naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) [19,20,23], and 4-fluoro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-F) [24]. Detection and quantification have preferentially been performed using HPLC with fluorescence or mass spectrometry detection [8,9,21,22,[25][26][27][28] although other chromatographic, electrophoretic, and immunological methods have been reported [15].…”
