Methylmercury: Bacterial Degradation in Lake Sediments

Abstract: During the first 50 days of a long-term period of incubation of lake sediments with inorganic mercury (Hg(2+)), low concentrations of methylinercury were observed to build up. Upon continued incubation there was a rapid decrease in amount of methylmercury in the system and a concomitant evolution of volatile inorganic mercury (Hg(0)). Transfer of the mixed culture to growth media containing methylmercury resulted in the degradation of methylmercury and the volatilization of Hg(0). Four bacterial isolates were … Show more

“…4 Methylation of inorganic mercury in sedi ments (JENSEN and JERNELOV, 1969;JERNELOV, 1970;LANGLEY, 1973;SPANGLER et al 1973) and its existence in natural sediments (ANDREN and HARRISS 1973;BATTI et al, 1975) Hg is plotted for organic N (o) and for showed that methylmercury reacts with hydro gen sulfide to produce a volatile sulfur derivative of methylmercury.…”

“…These organisms are hardy, being able to demethylate both aerobically and anearobically. The demethylation process is rapid, with 100% of any methylmercury added to the cultures being demethylated within 4 days and, in some cases, within 1 day (7,15). A majority of the organisms isolated that demethylate mercury have been identified as belonging to the Pseudomonas species (7).…”
