Methods to Our Madness: Adapting Methods to the Changing Nature of Our Problems

Abstract: T his editorial presents a series of frequently asked questions (FAQs) directed to us, as editors of the journal. It speaks to an assessment of the methods review element of the manuscript review process and the evolution witnessed in research methods employed in the journal. We illustrate the current state of research in JBL in terms of the methods used in accepted manuscripts, encouraging authors to employ the method(s) that best fit the research problem at hand. The purpose in bringing forward these observa… Show more

“…The survey serves the purpose of beginning to evaluate the relevance of considerations statistically. The use of this initial exploration using a survey is in line with Goldsby and Zinn's (2018) call for more multi-method research, combining qualitative and quantitative research when studying complex phenomena. They suggest that survey research can be used to frame, rather than to statistically generalize a problem, perhaps counter to common uses of multi-method and survey research, in that way returning to its descriptive roots.…”

“…For these reasons, Fawcett and Waller (2015, p. 239) have argued that “supply chain systems have not emerged to profitably create and deliver products to the world’s poorest citizens. We can do better.” At a broader level, this research stream flows from the observations of Goldsby and Zinn (2018, p. 236) who call for a focus on last‐mile SCM challenges by indicating “we are seeing more interest in tackling this ultimate segment of the supply chain.” To that end, this study has operationalized a context‐specific investigation of resilience at the BOP—an application of middle‐range theorizing (Carter, 2011; Garver, 2019).…”

“…Professor LaLonde founded JBL in 1978 and would lead the journal for its first decade and change, from 1978 to 1989 . Upon the sad occasion of LaLonde's death just over a year ago, Goldsby and Zinn () examined the early foundation for the journal, as expressed in the resolute beliefs of LaLonde () first editorial. There, he employed the life cycle concept to explain how the journal would evolve from an energetic outset to address the following objectives: To provide new and helpful information about transportation and distribution; To provide new theory or techniques in transportation and distribution; To provide researched generalizations about thought and practice in the field of transportation and distribution; and To provide articles in subject areas which have significant current impact in thought and practices in transportation and/or distribution and which present challenges for the future (p. vi). …”

“…Hypothesis testing would allow the field to move beyond describing what we see to explaining why we see it and, more importantly, predicting what we might see over time. As we have detailed in previous editorials, the field has embraced hypothesis testing and the application of theory (Zinn and Goldsby ; Goldsby and Zinn 2017; Goldsby and Zinn ). In fact, we are starting to see the gamut of theory building, theory testing, and theory elaboration in submitted manuscripts—which is a ready demonstration of maturity in our scholarship.…”
