This article explores some of the ways in which hacked Changeable Message Signs (CMSs) destabilize the physical space of motor transport spaces and jeopardize the institutionalized function of travel. While CMSs draw attention to the correlation between motorists’ current positions, possible inconveniences ahead and their final destination, hacked CMSs and the subsequent projection of unsanctioned messages destabilize this correlation. Hence, the seemingly straightforward relationship between motor transport spaces and the activities of motorists, pedestrians and passers-by is in fact fashioned by the particular kind of message that is displayed at any given moment. Focusing on the spatial effects of hacked CMSs and how the dissemination of unsanctioned information points to the social stratifications of motor transport spaces, hacking is understood as a means of combating the disciplinary regimes of roadways.

The rise in the number of cases of stroke has resulted in a significant burden on the healthcare system. As a result, the majority of care for the person living with stroke occurs within the community, resulting in caregivers being a central and challenged agent in care. To better support caregivers during the recovery trajectory poststroke, we investigated the role of health technologies to promote education and offer various kinds of support. However, the introduction of any new technology comes with challenges due to the growing need for more user-centric systems. The integration of user-centric systems in stroke caregiving has the potential to ensure long-term acceptance, success, and engagement with the technology, thereby ensuring better care for the person living with stroke. We first briefly characterize the affordances of available technologies for stroke caregiving. We then discuss key methodological issues related to the acceptance to such technologies. Finally, we suggest user-centered design strategies for mitigating such challenges.

Inquiry into anticipation is framed within this chapter in a view from Anticipation Studies not only Science, accentuating cultural, constructionist and critical interpretative aspects. In this theoretical excursus, authors argue that Futures Studies needs to more fully take up a body of work from Design Studies. Drawing on various aspects of Design inquiry, the chapter provides an overview of some of the approaches that have been advanced and ways they might offer Anticipation Studies routes and means to more fully framing approaches to the making and analysis of anticipatory systems, engagements, and reflections. As designerresearchers with academic transdisciplinary backgrounds, our views are positioned from the work of others as well as via practice based research through design epistemological investigations. Design Futures remains a fruitful space for further design inflected inquiry.
