Methods of fixation of intraocular lenses according to the anatomical structures in trauma eyes

Abstract: Ocular trauma can lead to severe visual impairment and morbidity, depending on the anatomical structures affected. The main causes of ocular trauma include foreign bodies, impact by an object, falls, and chemicals. Most ocular traumas occur in children or young male adults. A meticulous slit lamp examination is crucial for assessing all anatomical structures. Trauma to the crystalline lens can result in dislocation, an intralenticular foreign body, cataract, fragmentation, and capsular breach. An intraocular l… Show more

“…However, secondary IOL implantation is a challenging surgical procedure and demands suitable ocular conditions. Although the methods and timing of the surgical approach have changed over years, the functional reconstruction of the eye is often more difficult than the original attempt at anatomic reconstruction [ 3 , 10 ]. If there are local or general contraindications for surgery, appropriate contact lens correction can be offered to the patient.…”

“…Intralenticular foreign bodies (ILFBs) are a special subgroup of IOFBs. They are not commonly encountered, and they account for approximately 5% to 10% of all IOFBs [3]. The visual acuity of those patients usually shows some decline due to the aggravation of a traumatic cataract.…”

We have read the article by Fiorentzis et al (2017) with an interest; however, we believe that some comments and discussion is required. The authors present a review article on the methods of intraocular lens (IOL) fixation in trauma eyes.

The authors describe different surgical methods for placing IOL in the sulcus in eyes with the presence of capsular bag support.
