Visual Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Intralenticular Foreign Bodies in a Tertiary Hospital in North China

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological and visual outcomes and to identify the main prognostic factors of intralenticular foreign body (ILFB) injuries. Methods We performed a retrospective review of 21 patients (21 eyes) referred to Hebei Eye Hospital in North China from January 2012 to December 2017, who underwent surgical removal of ILFBs and associated ocular trauma repairs. Data regarding the patient demographics, cause of the injury, nature of the ILFB, clinical features, time in… Show more

“…Stable visual function without significant cataract formation has been described in some cases [ 25 , 26 ]. If visual acuity is compromised by cataract formation induced by the ILFB, removal of the cataract and ILFB is necessary [ 27 ]. All iron foreign bodies should be removed as early as possible to avoid siderosis bulbi, even if metallic ILFBs do not involve the visual axis [ 25 ].…”

“…Extracapsular cataract extraction and IOL implantation, combined with extraction of magnetic ILFBs, have been reported to be successful [ 31 , 32 ]. Advancements in microincision phacoemulsification, removal of ILFBs, phacoemulsification, and IOL implantation (tricombined operation) have been well reported [ 27 , 33 ]. It is important to locate the ILFB and determine whether the posterior capsule is intact before surgery [ 34 ].…”

“…6 Among penetrating ocular injuries, 18 -40% present with retained IOFB. 7,8 In majority of cases, injury is mainly due to occupational trauma in adults and unsafe games in children. 9 Keeping in view the modes of injury, majority of these injuries seem to be preventable and thus a number of people can be saved from getting blind through precautionary measures.…”
