Methods for the Chemical Analysis of Degradable Synthetic Polymeric Biomaterials

Abstract: The performance of biodegradable polymeric systems strongly depends on their physical as well as on their chemical properties. Therefore, detailed chemical analysis of such systems is essential. Enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis are the primary biodegradation mechanisms for these materials. This review provides an overview of the strategies and analytical methods used for the structural and compositional chemical analysis of nondegraded, partially degraded, and fully degraded synthetic polymeric biomaterials w… Show more

“…SA is usually obtained from marine brown algae. 14 It has been widely used in controlled drug delivery and pharmaceutical dosage materials due to their biocompatible, biodegradable, 13 high mechanical strength, and high hydrophilic nature. 15 It was investigated that SA based microspheres were used for drug delivery applications due to their flexibility in size, shape and their ability to entrap cells as well as biomolecules.…”

“…In continuation of our efforts to develop materials for controlled drug delivery [48,49], the purpose of the current study was to develop a smart drug delivery system for ciprofloxacin hydrochloride monohydrate (CPX) using biodegradable CS/PAH blend films. CS and PAH were selected to prepare a series of blend films with different compositions as smart drug delivery matrices.…”

“…In some cases, because of the structural and compositional complexity of synthetic polymers, the detailed characterization of a newly developed polymeric material is a challenging task, principally when it is prepared from innovative polymer chemistry, catalysis, or a formulation process. Analytical approaches and methods, for both characterization and degradation features, have a central role in the development of bioresorbable polymer systems and proving the suitability for specific applications . Mass spectrometry (MS) has played an increasingly important role in polymer analysis, thanks also to the improvement in instrumental techniques and the introduction of up‐to‐date configurations.…”
