Methods for estimating the velocities of the Brazil Current in the pre-salt reservoir area off southeast Brazil (23∘ S–26∘ S)

Abstract: The Brazil Current (BC) is likely the least observed and investigated subtropical western boundary current in the world. This study proposes a simple and systematic methodology to estimate quasi-synoptic crosssectional speeds of the BC within the Santos Basin (23 • S − 26 • S) based on the dynamic method using several combinations of data: Conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD), temperature profiles, CTD and vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VMADCP), and temperature profiles and VMADCP. “…The lowest in SSH is around the ABFZ and reaches the southwestern African coast. The high in SSH in the southwestern Atlantic is at the centre of the subtropical gyre with the Brazil Current at its western side (e.g., Bilo et al 2014). In NorESM, however, the lowest SSH in the ABFZ seems to be displaced southward because the SSH bias is negative south of the ABFZ and positive north of it.…”

“…Despite its relatively low maximum velocity, the BC system is associated with intense mesoscale activity, particularly in the BrazilMalvinas Confluence region, exhibiting strong year-to-year variability (Goni et al 2011), shedding of large anticyclonic rings (Lentini et al 2006), and possible contributing to the low frequency variability of the South Atlantic meridional heat transport (Dong et al 2015). Near Cabo Frio (23°S), most of the studies of the BC volume transport have relied upon geostrophic computations (e.g., Signorini 1978;Campos et al 1995;Silveira et al 2000;Mata et al 2012;Biló et al 2014). Although these works are based on the use of different reference levels, results indicate that most of the BC geostrophic transport is confined to the first 200 m of the water column, and meanders and eddies were captured close to Cabo Frio (23°S).…”

“…No cenário brasileiro as atividades da exploração de petróleo vêm crescendo de forma intensa e se direcionam cada vez mais para águas profundas, geralmente localizadas distante da costa (1) . Impulsionada pelas novas descobertas das reservas do pré-sal, a produção estimada de petróleo e gás no Brasil deve praticamente dobrar até 2020, com investimentos de US$ 236,5 bilhões no período entre 2012-2016 (2)(3)(4) .…”
