Methods and algorithms for computer synthesis of holographic elements to obtain a complex impulse response of optical information processing systems based on modern spatial light modulators

Abstract: The possibilities of designing optical devices for data processing and imaging based on the manipulation of coherent light beams by means of spatial light modulators (SLMs) are investigated. A review of commercially available SLMs is presented and the limitations of their complex modulation characteristics are analysed. The main problem of using present-day SLMs is the lack of the ability to modulate directly all states within a unit circle in the complex plane. In this regard, the characteristics of current m… Show more

“…This type of hologram is commonly synthesized by iterative methods such as the Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm [ 21 ]. Phase holograms are reconstructed using phase liquid crystal spatial light modulators [ 22 ]. Since these holograms are phase modulated, they cannot be directly displayed onto fast amplitude DMDs.…”

“…The former includes such subtypes as transmissive liquid crystal, reflective liquid crystal on silicon, and ferroelectric liquid crystal. MEMS-based spatial light modulators are presented by a digital micromirror device (DMD), an active micromirror matrix, and a grating light valve 18 .…”

“…Each of the devices is characterized by the type of modulation, among which they can be distinguished: amplitude-only, phase-only, and simultaneous amplitude-phase modulation. Different types of modulators were compared, based on which the advantages and disadvantages of each technique were identified 18 21 . The choice of the required device is determined by the peculiarities of the problem to be solved in a particular case.…”
