Methodology of Environmental Diagnosis for Construction and Demolition Waste Landfills: a Tool for Planning and Making Decisions

Abstract: Current legislation in the European Union regarding landfills provides measures, procedures and guidance to prevent or reduce, insofar as possible, negative effects on the environment. This means that Member States must take measures so that landfills cannot operate unless the operator first presents a plan for the site, which includes the implementation of improvements considered necessary by the engineer for compliance with regulations. Researchers at the University of Granada have developed a method to asce… Show more

“…A quantitative evaluation of the environmental health effects of C&D waste is difficult due to the complexity of factors involved and lack of consistent methodology. As many counties where regulated landfills are located lack funds, it is necessary to develop an efficient low-cost evaluation system [41].…”

“…Construction and demolition waste is a worldwide problem and several countries are mobilising to develop plans for their management. Among these various countries, some examples are: Turkey, Scotland, United States, Germany, Holland, Estonia, Denmark, Brazil and others (Amorim et al, 2013;Dilbas et al, 2014;Garrido et al, 2005;Medina et al, 2015;Pepe et al, 2014;Rodríguez-Robles et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2013). The reuse of construction and demolition waste in construction has benefits, not only by the reduction of waste generated that are generally disposed in landfills, but also in preserving natural resources, reducing the impacts associated with their extraction (Folino and Xargay, 2014).…”
