English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is teaching with the aim of assisting learners' study or research in the particular variety of English they may need. It has emerged from over 50 years of research and classroom practice and has become a major influence in university and workplace classrooms in many parts of the world. The basic idea behind ESP is that learners' needs differ enormously according to future academic or occupational goals, and this is why ESP has become so influential in universities around the world in recent years. There is a growing awareness that students have to take on new roles and engage with knowledge in new ways when they enter university and, eventually the workplace. They find that they need to write and read unfamiliar genres, and that communication practices are not uniform across the subjects they encounter. Simply, the English they learnt at school rarely prepares them for that which they need in Higher Education and in the world of work. In this paper I sketch some of the major ideas and practices that have shaped contemporary ESP and look at the main effects it is having on language teaching.

The Impact of Gamification “Kahoot App” in Teaching English for Academic Purposes

Incorporating gamification into foreign language learning is a successful and effective strategy for improving learners' level of language skills and helping them to master communication with others. This study aimed to determine the impact of Kahoot, a gamification-based technological application, on English language vocabulary for academic purposes and motivation. Thus, 60 students were selected from among the university students enrolled in the English Language for Academic Purposes course. These students were randomly split into two equal classes: the control and experimental groups. English vocabulary Test was given to both groups following a pre-test, with the experimental group receiving Kahoot instruction while the control group received traditional instruction. The teaching continued for ten weeks, after which the students were tested with a post-test on the same vocabulary learned. Moreover, a motivation scale was used to identify the effect of Kahoot in enhancing the students' motivation toward learning English for academic purposes. The results showed positive results on the extent of the positive impact (of the Kahoot learning tool based on gamification) in learning English vocabulary for academic purposes and motivation.

The paper focuses on terminological problems in contemporary cross-linguistic communication that are generated primarily by two main tendencies in global scientific communication — the digitalization in information processing and the English language globalization. Both are closely connected with a new approach in linguistics — discourse clustering and its role in promoting foreign language and translation instruction. The paper provides a corpus-based account of Russian–English translation problems concerning clear-cut distinctions between Russian versus English academic style’s language-specific patterns in terminology discursive clustering, as well as their didactic and methodological importance for foreign language acquisition, Russian-English and English-Russian translation. The main idea is that the most important contemporary terminological problem in a cross-linguistic perspective is the lack of active authentic and language-specific terminology patterns in Russian–English scientific translations.
