Institutions such as ICOFORT (International committee on fortifications and military heritage) encourages the development of diagnosis strategies for the conservation and maintenance of historic earthen walls as highly necessary. Thus, it is important to be aware of the conditions in urban contexts, where the deterioration can be more aggressive and the risk of damage increases. Despite this, there are many strategies of constructive diagnosis for these kinds of monuments, but not many of them are concerned with the structural assessment of situations in which the ramparts work as a retaining wall in an unforeseen way. The medieval ramparts of Seville (Spain) are shown as a completely representative case study of the above-mentioned situation. In the research sector, the monument resists the lateral earth pressure developed by the new difference in height at both sides of the wall. Based on the limited states principle and on different international codes formulation, a tool was programmed to carry out automatic calculations to verify the case study’s overall stability conditions using standard sections. The obtained results were based on the overturning, bearing, and sliding overdesign factors (ODF) and determined a stable situation that could be at risk because of changes in the surrounding such as, excavations or the movements of the ground water table, or seismic events. Thus, the need and usefulness of strategies and control instruments that should be integrated into heritage intervention projects have been proved.

Assessment of rural wall fortifications using SfM digital photogrammetry technique. Methodological application to Alhonoz Castle (Ecija, Spain) Resumen E l Castillo de Alhonoz, catalogado como Bien de Interés Cultural en 1985, es una de las fortalezas más importantes en el término municipal de Écija (Sevilla, España), resultando un enclave estratégico para las poblaciones asentadas en su entorno desde época protohistórica. A fin de contribuir en el avance del conocimiento de estos sistemas defensivos, y facilitar procesos de evaluación y diagnostico de este tipo de estructuras, se ha implementado un procedimiento de modelado fotogramétrico digital basado en la técnica Structure from motion (SfM-Estructura desde el movimiento), como parte de una metodología testada ya por los autores. La aplicación de esta sencilla técnica, versátil y de baja especialización, ha permitido realizar una evaluación preliminar fiable para una toma de decisión por parte de los técnicos competentes.

The "Monitoring City Walls" research project by the University of Pisa approaches planned conservation as a process that pursues an in-depth understanding of historic city walls and their surroundings to define a system of effective risk prevention. This multidisciplinary research adopts monitoring strategies and technologies at the large scale and in relationship to natural and urban conditions. The underlying logic frames the conservation of these historic fortifications within the more general mitigation of risks generated by context. The research aims to develop an innovative approach to monitoring ancient defensive structures in historical towns. The integrated use of advanced technologies allows for the control and, most importantly, advance identification of possible risks. These new technologies, in particular satellite interferometry, make it possible to improve and increase the operational capacity of monitoring processes by facilitating the acquisition and investigation of data relative to the system defined by ancient city walls and their surroundings. These technologies also represent a cost-effective tool for managing the important transition from the observation and study of individual monuments to the monitoring of large monumental complexes or even entire historical centers.
