The disintegration of the integrated logging enterprises, as well as of the forestry enterprises and the reduced attention of the authorities to the production of specialized machinery and equipment, the logging production process, have led to a decline in the equipment of the logging enterprises with specialized machinery and the effective organization of their operation. Small, privately owned, poorly equipped with machinery logging companies have emerged. Practically we reverted to the technology of the 1960s. Foreign chainsaws are used for felling, delimbing and crosscutting. The skidding operation practically uses general-purpose tractors of МТЗ-80(82) type with the simplest technological equipment – a set of chokers. Some of the larger companies use foreign harvesters and forwarders. According to our research, forestry farms of the Republic of Bashkortostan are in a similar position. In order to increase the level of equipment and improve the organization of its work at the enterprises of the Republic of Bashkortostan we have considered and proposed for use a number of machinery sets. However, practice shows that it is not enough to acquire and equip the production with modern machinery and equipment. A production process must be set up to ensure the effective operation of these machines. Logging as a complex, multi-operated, discrete process can be carried out using a variety of technologies. The most common technology nowadays is the logging and hauling of assortments, for which various harvesting machines and equipment can be used. For the effective operation, harvesting machines performing individual operations are combined into machinery sets. However, current practice shows that it is not possible to match machines and equipment with the same or slightly different capacities. Therefore, the output of such sets is usually equal to, or even lower than, the output of the operation with the lowest capacity. In order to increase the output of the machinery set to the output of the leading machine (the machine with the highest capacity), it is necessary to calculate the modes of operation of machines for specific operating conditions. There are five sets of logging machines offered. The costs that the use of each of them will require are calculated. On the basis of the obtained data it is concluded that in the conditions of the Republic of Bashkortostan it is most economically feasible to use the following set: chainsaw for felling, choker tractor for skidding, two chainsaws for delimbing and crosscutting, lumber carrier for hauling.

Time-Optimal Trajectory Planning for Woodworking Manipulators Using an Improved PSO Algorithm

Woodworking manipulators are applied in wood processing to promote automatic levels in the wood industry. However, traditional trajectory planning results in low operational stability and inefficiency. Therefore, we propose a method combining 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial (composed of cubic and quintic polynomials) interpolation and an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to study trajectory planning and time optimization of woodworking manipulators. In trajectory planning, we conducted the kinematics analysis to determine the position information of joints at path points in joint space and used 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial interpolation to fit a point-to-point trajectory and ensure the stability. For trajectory time optimization, we propose an improved PSO that adapts multiple strategies and incorporates a golden sine optimization algorithm (Gold-SA). Therefore, the proposed improved PSO can be called GoldS-PSO. Using benchmark functions, we compared GoldS-PSO to four other types of PSO algorithms and Gold-SA to verify its effectiveness. Then, using GoldS-PSO to optimize the running time of each joint, our results showed that GoldS-PSO was superior to basic PSO and Gold-SA. The shortest running time obtained by using GoldS-PSO was 47.35% shorter than before optimization, 8.99% shorter than the basic PSO, and 6.23% shorter than the Gold-SA, which improved the running efficiency. Under optimal time for GoldS-PSO, our simulation results showed that the displacement and velocity of each joint were continuous and smooth, and the acceleration was stable without sudden changes, proving the method’s feasibility and superiority. This study can serve as the basis for the motion control system of woodworking manipulators and provide reference for agricultural and forestry engineering optimization problems.

Micro and small wood-processing enterprises represent the heart of European forest-based industries, being among the key drivers of economic growth in rural, mountainous, and poor regions. Their economic efficiency is of fundamental importance for their existence and the provision of income for the local population in rural areas. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used in the current research, which is a nonparametric, linear-programming-based approach that is commonly used to analyse the efficiency of organisational units. The main objective of this study was to investigate and evaluate the economic efficiency of micro and small wood-processing enterprises in EU countries and reveal the hidden inputs that facilitate efficiency generation. The economic efficiency evaluation was carried out on the basis of the official statistical data for the micro and small wood-processing companies in EU member states for the period 2015–2020 by performing a two-stage DEA analysis. The data used were standardised by value per employee. In addition to the first stage of DEA, a fractional regression probit and logit models with four contextual variables were used to reveal the influence of the hidden inputs in the model. The results showed that the micro and small wood-processing enterprises can be regarded as more scale-efficient than technically efficient entities. The only contextual variable affecting the economic efficiency was Investments per Person Employed, improving the efficiency by 2% per 1% increase in the investments.
