Method for Reconfiguring Train Schedules Taking into Account the Global Reduction of Railway Energy Consumption

Abstract: The paper aims to propose a method of reconfiguring the train timetable, taking into account minimising the globally consumed energy for traction purposes. This is a very important issue in the context of rising electricity prices, alarming climate changes and the “Fit for 55” policy introduced in Europe. Each unit of energy saved contributes to improving the state of the planet and reducing the negative human impact on it. In this paper, the authors propose a model that, when applied, will reconfigure the tim… Show more

“…Among these, the highest priority is given to the safety of the train fleet in such a way that the most amount of calculations for adjusting the timetables is spent to take safety considerations into account. Some of the most important rules for regulating timetables in the metro network are as follows (Kierzkowski & Haładyn, 2022): ➢ The maximum amount of time in a table for dispatching a particular train is when the next train in the dispatch sequences has a higher priority dispatch from the beginning points of the lines. ➢ The minimum interval time for the movement of trains for a specific train in a schedule when departing from the origin or departing from stations along the route is set when the next train has a lower priority to be dispatched.…”

“…However, the optimization method of the traction curve for energy-saving is a multi-objective optimization problem that comprehensively considers the mutual restriction of operation safety, line infrastructure, traction conditions and operation energy-savings [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. The interaction of multiple factors leads to the difference in train energy consumption in different environments and different operations, among which traction force, braking force, traction condition and braking condition have an obvious influence on the energy consumption of the train [ 18 , 20 , 21 ]. The idling based on the inertial motion of the train is an important operation mode to reduce energy consumption and provides the optimal conditions for energy-saving [ 21 , 22 ].…”
