Method based on market changes for improvement of comparative attributional life cycle assessments

Abstract: Purpose Current comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) studies claim to answer whether it is better or worse for the environment to change from old to new systems. Most commonly, the attributional LCA (ALCA) is practised despite its limitations to describe market effects. Hence, an attempt is done here to include market effects in the ALCA practice for comparisons in order to improve ALCA. The purpose is neither to investigate which LCA concept, ALCA, consequential LCA or decisional LCA, is the best for compa… Show more

“…However, weighting scoring systems are often based on expert judgment and can sometimes be extremely biased. Andrae (2015a) developed the AALCA to measure high eco-environmental impact products such as office computers and personal devices. The approach has improved the attributional LCA method to better understand the comparative ALCA practice.…”

“…Uncertainty is one of the characteristics of the real world; including uncertainty and sensitivity analysis can help achieve a more realistic result. Therefore, future work should include the adaptation of AALCA (Andrae 2015a) and different methods such as Monte Carlo or exploratory modelling (Noori et al 2014b).…”

“…The environmental loadings of new deployment of the whole t-Site will be compared to the i-Site in a semi-prospective manner and with advanced attributional LCA (AALCA), dealing with the first and fourth steps of LCA [20]. In AALCA allocation factors are applied which are also know as Global Change Mix Factors (GCMF).…”

“…Although attributional system models are, per definition, not intended for decision support that involves changes or choices between alternatives (Weidema and Schmidt ; Andrae ; Plevin et al. ), there is always a risk that their results anyway end up as input to such a decision‐making procedure.…”
