“…Among the vast number of human pathogens, the bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus and the fungal species Candida albicans are currently the second and third most commonly isolated bloodstream pathogens (Goetghebeur et al, 2007;Klevens et al, 2007;Perlroth et al, 2007). In particular, S. aureus has gained considerable attention from the medical community due to its involvement in the increasing number of nosocomial and community acquired infections resulting in nearly half a million hospitalizations and 50 000 deaths each year in the USA alone (Goetghebeur et al, 2007;Gordon & Lowy, 2008).…”

This bacterial species is armed with an array of virulence factors including toxins and immunoavoidance strategies for invading and destroying host tissue during infection (Bien et al, 2011;Ferry et al, 2005).…”

“…Antibiotic resistance continues to increase among S. aureus isolates, including isolates of community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) (7,30), health care-associated MRSA (12), and S. aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (20). Understanding how this organism avoids host immune defenses is crucial for the development of new strategies to prevent and treat infections.…”

“…1 Infectious disease guidelines recommend empiric antimicrobial coverage for MRSA when this type of infection is suspected; however, it is just as crucial to identify situations when MRSA coverage is not needed.…”
