Methanolic extract of Ruta graveolens L. inhibits inflammation and oxidative stress in adjuvant induced model of arthritis in rats

Abstract: Ruta graveolens L. (Rutaceae) are traditionally used for the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions in the traditional medicine of India. The purpose of this study was to investigate anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of methanolic extract of Ruta graveolens L. in adjuvant induced arthritis in rats. Methanolic extract of Ruta graveolens (MER) exhibited maximum percentage of oedema inhibition at a dose of 20 mg/kg on 21st day of adjuvant arthritis. The effect was higher tha… Show more

“…In inflamed tissue, COX -2 is unregulated. This may be responsible for the enhanced production of prostaglandins (Ratheesh et al, 2009). In a study conducted by Ratheesh et al (2009), the reduction of rat paw oedema and the reduced activity of COX -2 indicated anti-inflammatory effects.…”

“…This may be responsible for the enhanced production of prostaglandins (Ratheesh et al, 2009). In a study conducted by Ratheesh et al (2009), the reduction of rat paw oedema and the reduced activity of COX -2 indicated anti-inflammatory effects. Amabeoku et al (2012), reported that C. orbiculata reduced carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, and suggested that the plant may have affected inflammatory mediators to produce its anti-inflammatory activity.…”

“…Food efficiency increased significantly when rats fed the diets containing fenugreek with date extract, primrose oil in combination with date extract or fish oil with date extract. (Ratheesh et al 2009). ESR has been reported to be an excellent index for assessing the therapeutic effect of anti-inflammatory agents (Arvidsoon et al, 1998).…”

“…Furanocoumarins were one of the main active constituents of Ruta graveolens and were also reported to be potent antioxidants while total phenolic content showed good correlation with nitric oxide reduction potential. Antioxidant activity of in vitro, culture was significantly higher compared to in vivo plant material [19], [20]. Terminalia chebula were investigated for antilipid peroxidation, antisuperoxide radical formation and free radical scavenging activities [21][22][23][24][25][26][27].…”
