Methanol Extract ofArtemisia apiaceaHance Attenuates the Expression of Inflammatory Mediators via NF-κB Inactivation

Abstract: Artemisia apiacea Hance is one of the most widely used herbs for the treatment of malaria, jaundice, and dyspeptic complaint in oriental medicine. This study investigated the effects of methanol extracts of A. apiacea Hance (MEAH) on the induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and proinflammatory mediators by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in Raw264.7 macrophage cells and also evaluated the in vivo effect of MEAH on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. MEAH treatment in Raw264.7 cells significantly dec… Show more

“…However, the other compounds in Artemisia ordosica , such as terpenoids, coumarins, acetylenes, caffeoylquinic acids and sterol, were not measured. In an effort to identify active constituents of methanol extract of Artemisia apiacea , it was analysed by GC‐MS (Ryu et al, ). Unfortunately, we did not detect the composition of WEAO by GC‐MS analysis.…”

“…Previous study reported that the antioxidant protection of apple, similar to that of many other dietary plants, may be due largely to the presence of phenolics (Eberhardt, Lee, & Liu, 2000;Tsao, Yang, JCY, & Zhu, 2003 TA B L E 5 Effects of WEAO on the contents of cytokines in serum of weanling piglets a and sterol, were not measured. “…In fact, the only adverse effect noted in the clinical trials on A. annua tea has been nausea which remits when therapy is completed. 30,32 Co-administration with common, mild anti-emetic herbs such as mint, ginger or other aromatic spices may alleviate or prevent nausea in some patients based on empirical evidence. The safety of A. annua in pregnancy has not been studied.…”

“…A recently identified chemical substance in A. apiacea extract, isolated by the China Traditional Chinese Medicine Academy (http://www.catcm.ac.cn/), has shown a good antimalarial effect that is equal to artemisinin (5-7). A. apiacea is a herb commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, which exhibits anti-inflammatory and antipyresis, antibacterial, antiparasitic and immunosuppressive effects (8). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Artemisia extract on the allergic response induced by compound 48/80 in rats.…”
