Methane Emission and Milk Production of Dairy Cows Grazing Pastures Rich in Legumes or Rich in Grasses in Uruguay

Abstract: Simple SummaryGHGs emissions are relevant in evaluating environmental impact of farming systems. Methane (CH4) produced by enteric fermentation accounts for half of all anthropogenic emissions of GHGs in Uruguay, where ruminant production is based on year round grazing of forages. Here we compared milk production and CH4 emissions by dairy cows grazing two contrasting mixed pastures (rich in legumes or rich in grasses) using the SF6 tracer technique adapted to collect breath samples over 5-days periods. There … Show more

“…Methane emissions from enteric fermentation were calculated using the methane conversion factor (Ym) which is the percent of gross energy (GE) loss by methane, using the average default IPCC value (6.5%), which is similar to the Ym measured in Uruguay for dairy cows (Dini et al, 2012). Methane emissions from manure were estimated considering pasture management system according to IPCC (2006), that is, manure deposited during grazing.…”

“…Methane release in the cecum and colon (C&C) was considered to be 5 % of total methane release. Enteric methane is produced mainly in the rumen (95 %) and, to a smaller extent (5 %), in the large intestine (Dini et al, 2012).…”
