Abstract:This article reviews basic principles of the statistical analysis of large extreme values (EVs), the role of simulations in the development of relevant meteorological data sets, the interaction between the EV modeling process and its application to engineering, and specific issues pertaining to wind, snow, ice, storm surge, and ocean waves. Classical approaches and the peak over threshold approach (POT) to the estimation of univariate extreme value distributions are briefly described. The distributions include… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
