Coastal settlements, facing increasing flood risk from Tropical Cyclones (TCs) under climate change, need local and detailed climate information for effective adaptation. Analysis of historical events and their impacts provides such information. This study uses storylines to evaluate adaptation strategies, focusing on Cyclone Idai’s impact on Beira, Mozambique, under different climate conditions and tidal cycles. A storyline of Idai under 3°C warming increases flood impacts by 1.8 times, while aligning Idai with spring tides amplifies these by 21 times. Combining both conditions increases impacts beyond 37 times. An adaptation strategy combining flood protection and accommodation measures reduces impacts by maximum 83\%, while a seawall strategy reduces these by 10\%. By offering localised, detailed information, storylines can be used to measure the effectiveness of adaptation strategies against extreme events, evaluating their robustness across different scenarios, and quantifying residual impacts, complementing traditional climate risk assessments for informed decision making.

With the ever-increasing climate change, actions to reduce its negative impact while improving food and nutrition security are critical. This review is a retrospective analysis of climate adaptation strategies and implications for food and nutrition security among small-scale farmers in South Africa. The review used bibliometric analysis and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis to track research on implications of adaptation on food and nutrition security, identify adaptation strategies with implications on food and nutrition security and discuss the implications. The analysis shows a steady growth in the research field; however, whether the pace will accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 by 2030 is unknown. Institutional research collaboration is notable, although weak. The co-occurrence of keywords reflects Climate-Smart Agriculture and food and nutrition linkages, emphasizes the importance of farmers’ perceptions on adopting measures to enhance food and nutrition security and illustrates the risk-vulnerability-resilience nexus. Adaptation measures with implications on food and nutrition security are varied, ranging from individual efforts to government-led initiatives. We recommend strengthening institutional research collaboration to accelerate the pace towards achieving zero hunger, food security and nutrition by 2030. It is also important to have an inclusive policy framework that addresses farmers’ adaptation needs.

The climate hotspot is the region of the landfall of Idai, and impacts of TC landfall are related to climate change features by the dependence of TC intensity and frequency on ambient temperature, and by the impact of sea level rise on the exposure to storm-induced surge (Knutson et al, 2019;Walsh et al, 2019;Dube et al, 2021). The impact transmission consists of a response of European governmental and non-governmental organizations to the disaster relief and development aid to disasters striking in the risk-prone south-east African area with a lack of financial relief resources.…”
