Metastasis to the Jawbones: A review of 453 cases

Abstract: The purpose of the present article was to review the characteristics of the jawbone metastases to analyze all variables. A relevant English Literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar was performed. All variables such as age, gender, primary and secondary tumor sites were analyzed. There were 453 metastatic cases. The male-to-female ratio was 1.2:1, and the mean age of the patients was 53.4 years. The lung was the most common primary site in men, and breast in women. The most common metastatic site… Show more

“…An innovative technology addressing these problems is nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma (NTP). With moderate temperatures, NTPs avoid thermal host tissue damage but have in fact much higher antimicrobial effects than, e.g., UV or hydrogen peroxide treatments (30,31). In addition, NTPs are very effective against antibioticresistant pathogens and there are no antimicrobial resistance mechanisms against plasma known to date (32)(33)(34).…”

“…However, no pathognomonic image exists and any possibility is available. Bone lesion patrons tend to be osteolytic but also small osteoblastic areas could be appreciated in most of them 6,23 . It could be difficult to differentiate from osteonecrosis, inasmuch as a lot of patients have radiotherapy or associated drugs uptake (biphosphonates, RANKL inhibitors, VEGF inhibitors) background.…”

“…This fact may reflect differences in the prevalence of primary tumours and indirectly oncologic risk factors, genetics and lifestyles. Most reported cases in the literature are from United States of America, inserting an important geographic bias 5,6 .…”

“…In most cases, the primary tumor has previously been discovered, and the presence of metastases in the mouth is associated with a poor long-term prognosis. In 27.6% of cases, these oral metastases are the first clinical manifestation of a tumor located elsewhere in the body [2], and their diagnosis is therefore crucial.…”
