Microorganisms are predominantly organized in biofilms, where cells live in dense communities and are more resistant to external stresses than are their planktonic counterparts. With experiments, the susceptibility of biofilms to a nonthermal plasma treatment (plasma source, kINPen09) in terms of growth, survival, and cell viability was investigated. strain SC5314 (ATCC MYA-2876) was plasma treated for different time periods (30 s, 60 s, 120 s, 180 s, 300 s). The results of the experiments, encompassing CFU, fluorescence Live/Dead, and 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide salt (XTT) assays, revealed a negative influence of the plasma treatment on the proliferation ability, vitality, and metabolism of biofilms, respectively. Morphological analysis of plasma-treated biofilms using atomic force microscopy supported the indications for lethal plasma effects concomitant with membrane disruptions and the loss of intracellular fluid. Yielding controversial results compared to those of other publications, fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopic inspection of plasma-treated biofilms indicated that an inactivation of cells appeared mainly on the bottom of the biofilms. If this inactivation leads to a detachment of the biofilms from the overgrown surface, it might offer completely new approaches in the plasma treatment of biofilms. Because of plasma's biochemical-mechanical mode of action, resistance of microbial cells against plasma is unknown at this state of research. Microbial communities are an increasing problem in medicine but also in industry. Thus, an efficient and rapid removal of biofilms is becoming increasingly important. With the aid of the kINPen09, a radiofrequency plasma jet (RFPJ) instrument, decisive new findings on the effects of plasma on biofilms were obtained. This work showed that the inactivation of biofilms takes place mainly on the bottom, which in turn offers new possibilities for the removal of biofilms by other strategies, e.g., mechanical treatment. This result demonstrated that nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma is well suited for biofilm decontamination.

Objective: Retrospective descriptive study of 21 oral soft tissue and/or maxillary bone metastatic cases.Materials and methods: Hospital records of our own department are reviewed for a 12-year period. Lymphoproliferative diseases, skin metastases, salivary glands, other craniofacial bones and cervical lymph-nodes are excluded. Epidemiologic, personal health, clinical, treatment and follow-up data are recollected and analysed in frequency statistics. Results: Male:Female ratio is 1.3:1, year-old range 52-82 and ethnic group 100 % white-caucasian. 19.0 % have carcinogenic occupational exposure, 52.4 % tobacco abuse, 61.9 % some kind of alcohol use, 57.1 % cardiovascular risk, 19.0 % cardiologic records, 28.6 % pulmonary, 19.0 % gastrointestinal, 19.0 % endocrine, 14.3 % genitourinary, 9.5 % other primary malignancy and 23.8% a first-degree relative with a neoplasm. 33.3 % patients have taken osteonecrosisrelated drugs or received craniofacial radiotherapy.Metastasis is the debut in 7 patients while it corresponds to infirmity progression in 14. The chief reason for consultation is a mass. 8 lesions affect soft tissue and 13 the bone. 81.0 % have epithelial neoplasm lineages. The organ of origin is: 23.8 % lung, 23.8 breast, 23.8 % kidney, 9.5 % skin, 9.5 % soft parts, 4.8 % prostate and 4.8 % thyroid. 100 % have other location metastases. 14.3 % patients undergo surgery, 38.1 % receive radiotherapy, 47.6 % chemo-or targeted therapy, and 28.6 % symptomatic treatment. Introduction: Oral metastases are rare and represent only 1% of malignant diseases of the oral cavity, but they are often associated with poor prognosis. The primary tumor is recognizable in most cases; however, in 27.6% of cases, metastasis is the first clinical manifestation. Observation: An 82-year-old consulted for the recent appearance of a 1-cm-wide gingival tumor on 46. Since this patient had metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma, oral metastasis was confirmed by histopathology. In the following weeks, other oral metastases appeared. Palliative radiotherapy was the chosen treatment option, but the patient died before he could benefit from it. Discussion: Multiple oral metastases are rare, and metastasis of renal origin is not the most frequently encountered. The metastatic dissemination pathway described is hematogenous or lymphatic. Diagnosis is often easy if the primary tumor is already identified, but is a challenge if it is not, because the lesion often has a nonspecific appearance. Different surgical, radiotherapeutic, and medical therapeutic options exist, but are often palliative. A new immunotherapy route is under development and looks promising in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. Conclusions: Oral metastasis often has poor prognosis, and management of the lesion is problematic. However, current research suggests a therapeutic and prognostic improvement.
