Metaplastic carcinoma of the breast – Case report and review of literature

Abstract: Metaplastic carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm of breast, accounting for about 1% of breast carcinomas [1]. It's presentation is similar to other type of breast cancers clinically as well as radiologically but it is associated with rapid growth. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role in establishing the diagnosis of metaplastic carcinoma. There is no common consensus about optimal treatment modality for metaplastic carcinoma. Overall survival is less in metaplastic carcinoma as compared to invasive … Show more

“…Both clinically and radiographically, they present similarly to other breast cancers. Research reports have mentioned tumor presentation in 22 to 91 years [5][6][7]. At diagnosis, axillary lymph node metastasis was observed in 5-56% of cases.…”

“…The epithelial origin of metaplastic carcinoma is mostly dependent on demonstrating a positive expression of cytokeratin, at least focally on immunohistochemistry. It also stains for vimentin and smooth muscle actin [6,7]. Because metaplastic carcinoma is uncommon and heterogeneous, the best course of treatment has not been determined.…”

“…The role of targeted therapy and conventional chemotherapy is limited by the lack of hormone receptor expression and the human epidermal growth factor 2 receptor (HER2). While post-mastectomy radiotherapy was linked to advantages in overall survival in the advanced stage but not in the early stage, post-lumpectomy radiotherapy was associated with greater overall survival in both the early and advanced stages of the carcinoma [6,8]. The significant predictors of survival include the duration of symptoms, stage of the tumor, size of the tumor, and status of axillary nodes [6].…”

“…It was first described by Edmondson in 1956. [1][2][3][4][5][6] In her review of liver tumours, Edmondson presented a study report of a 14-year-old girl with unusually long survival after resection of this liver tumour (it was established later that this cancerous tumour was fibrolamellar carcinoma). And in 1980, fibrolamellar cancer was widely recognized as a separate clinical component after two reports by Craig and Berman in 1980 were simultaneously published.…”
