Metallo‐Controlled Dynamic Molecular Tweezers: Design, Synthesis, and Self‐Assembly by Metal‐Ion Coordination

Abstract: The introduction of controllable dynamic features into synthetic receptors represents a step towards “smart” adaptive nanodevices. We report herein our studies on the construction of dynamic molecular tweezers in which the binding of a substrate is allosterically controlled through shape switching of the receptor induced by metal‐ion coordination. 1D, 2D NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography were used to identify the nature of the metallosupramolecular entity generated. The presence of large aromatic naph… Show more

“…These intricate ensembles have revolutionized the field of supramolecular chemistry. The work of Lehn,5, 6 Stoddart,7, 8 Schmittel,911 and others1222 continues to introduce increased complexity into multicomponent systems; however, most self‐assembly techniques rely on the target compound having the most thermodynamic stability leading to the desired structure. Less stable products must be synthesized by kinetic control, utilizing structural factors such as steric or ionic effects to achieve the desired macromolecular targets.…”

“…Intermediates 1 and 2 are prepared by the high-yield monofunctionalization through pH-controlled reaction of primary amine with NTCDA. [ 21,22 ] The further reaction with acetic anhydride generates the dissymmetric molecular components 3 and 4 . Compound 5 was synthesized by similar condensation reaction as the symmetrical derivatives, since pH-controlled monofunctionalization of NTCDA by 4-pyridylamine resulted in a small yield of the target intermediate compound (unlike in the case of 1 and 2 ).…”

“…Synthesis of monomers and polymers N-(5-Norbornene-2-methyl) naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic monoanhydride monoimide (2) Compound 2 was synthesized by modifying method in literature. [22] 1,4,5,8-Naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride 1 (2.80 g, 10.4 mmol) was suspended in water (400 mL). KOH pallets were added while stirring until complete dissolution of the starting material.…”
